CHIP is being superseded by the REACH and CLP regulations, which implement the use
of the Globally Harmonised System (GHS) of hazard classification. The situation can
appear confusing as these two systems of classification and labelling can run in
parallel and even the names have changed:
CHIP risk phrases ('R phrases') are being replaced by CLP Hazard statements
CHIP danger symbols are being replaced by CLP pictograms
The situation is still changing:
The CLP regulation (EC) 1272/2008 has been ammended by the 1st Adaptation to Technical
Progress (ATP) -regulation (EC) 790/2009. This has changed the hazard classification
of many substances.
Safety Data Sheet (SDS) requirements are specified in the REACH regulation (EC) 1907/2006
but these have been ammended by regulation (EU) 453/2010 which came into force in
December 2010. All Safety Data Sheets issued after December 2010 must comply with
this new regulation.
